Merbau Decking FAQ: Are all Merbau decking products the same?

Merbau decking is often a hot topic in the timber merchant game and there’s a range of reasons why.

Source. Merbau is native to south-east Asia and has historically been harvested in a less than sustainable way. Our directors are very aware of the factors involving sustainable forestry of Merbau and timber in general, and the certifications that apply. This is why we buy from reputable wholesalers who import merbau that is certified by appropriate authorities. Not all retailers are aware of this and may not care to supply merbau from these sources.

Appearance and Grade. Premium, kiln dried merbau decking is what we stock. Not finger jointed, and not coated in a product. We have found most of our clients would like a consistent and solid appearance, and are happy to front up for that. Supplying raw merbau provides flexibility for our customers to select the type of oil or product, rather than being tied to a particular brand that may not be fit for the customers needs. We prefer to supply merbau decking that is reeded on one side, dressed on the other side and has pencil round edges. When installing reeded side down on the joists, the spaces in the ribs prevent moisture retention thus improving the longevity of the deck.

Sizes & Price. We stock 70, 90 and 140mm widths by 19mm thick merbau decking boards in random lengths or set lengths.

Often we are asked why set lengths are priced slightly higher than the random lengths and the answer is that longer set lengths require larger logs and additional production costs. That being said, you get exactly the size you are after, and less offcuts means more value for more overall.

Are you getting the same product from one supplier to the next? Not necessarily. What may seem like a good deal could in fact be inferior quality, seconds grade, or unsustainably sourced. This may work for some and that is okay but our ethos is providing consistent, high quality timber for fair prices. We work very hard developing supplier relationships to offer this. It is important to our business that we foster relationships with customers where they are happy to return to us for products because they appreciate these factors.

If you weren’t already aware, we also supply timber for joists, bearers and posts. As well as joist protection products, fixtures, hand tools, bagged cements and timber oils and treatments. From in ground to finished product Van Steensel’s can take care of the lot and have it delivered to your door by our own experienced delivery drivers.. Merbau decking is just a part of our product range.
